| GRAN
CANARIA Feb 2010
Finally managed to
get back over to GranCanaria again in early Feb. With guitar in one hand
and a beer in the other, we trawled the bars of the Yumbo centre playing
wherever they had the bottle (and vision) to let me get up on stage. We
had a ball thanks to Stefan the Great Dane (for the Hendrix riffs), Jo at Fuse Bar
(for all the gossip) and Missee (for just letting on). Going back out
for Gay Pride Maspalomas 2010 in May so please come up and say hi if you see me about. |

As a matter of priority, met up with my old mate Gary Lithgow
to catch up on the gossip. Regular
visitors to Playa Del Ingles will know Gary from his residency at
Gemini's Bar on Avenida de Tirajana. A top class singer and guitarist,
Gary invited me to guest at one of his regular afternoon gigs at Las
Walkiras. Billed by Gary as Chuck & Buck, we rehearsed for 5 minutes in
the hotel lobby and went on to treat (subject?) the holidaymakers to a
bunch of country (and not-so-country!) standards. It turned out to be a
great afternoon with Gary finishing the rest of the gig on
electro-acoustic with no backing tracks. This was a talent of Gary's I
had never seen and worked really well as we enjoyed a cold beer at the
pool bar in the late-afternoon sunshine. Check out

Did
quite a few spots at the (relatively) new Minnelli's Bar in the Yumbo.
Still in early days, this bar has the potential to be be a great live
venue. Tucked away in the corner of 'The Square' behind the trampolines
(!), the bar was once Dolly's bar and, more recently, QE2 showbar. The
venue has a great sound and light system (unlike many of the bars in the
Yumbo!). Also managed to do a few numbers with Giles from Dunes & Tunes
who was doing a spot. Thanks to Colin, Steve and the team for making me
so welcome and good luck
for 2010! |

The
biggest buzz of the trip must have been at
Sparkles Showbar ... Walked past
the bar (big, open terrace drag show-bar) one night after doing a couple
of spots at the other venues. It was a packed house and Andi Martine was
working his magic with the audience. Of course, he could not let a
hillbilly armed with a guitar walk past the venue without at least
saying something (taking the p***?). Anyway, jeered on by the punters he
invited (dared?) me to come on to the stage. I think he was surprised
when I took him up on his offer and bounced onto the stage, plugged in
and belted out a few numbers for the gob-smacked crowd! It all happened
like something out of one of those old Cliff Richard films! Anyway, Andi
and the crowd were fab. Thanks for taking a chance guys; Salut!

Managed to get a few numbers in at
Ricky's Bar. I must admit, when we
approached the management and told them what we wanted to do, to say
they were hesitant is an understatement! No miming? No backing tracks?
No karaoke? Needless to say, once I plugged in and belted out an
unrepeatable version of 'Que Sera', they were gagging for more! Thanks
again guys; see you soon. |
